For the last few years I've use this race to redeem myself just a little for doing so poorly in the Norwalk Half, not so this year. The alarm went off at 5:10 I rolled over and went back to sleep. I wasn't sure of what I was hearing just a few snooze later..."oh my God rain" and it sounded like showers. Didn't think much, I've got a couple of hours it could stop by then. My son's alarm went off at 6:24, I got up and went to his room and turned it off. I listen for a few more minutes before I snoozed off again it was still raining. The next time I woke I was in a panic it was 7:15 the race starts at 8:30 and I need 30 mins. to get there. You could imagine what it was like the next 15 mins or so. I was in my car at 7:51 couldn't imagin where the time went. Got there and it took me a little bit to find parking. I should have used my instinct and park in the same lot I pass on the first go around because I ended up right there. Now it was a race to get my bib. There was a potty up the hill and I said why not get it out of the way!!. Then it was up the hill again. Went to the door where I saw a ton of people but it was lock, they were just staying out of the rain. Someone told me to follow the voice, they had already lined up for the start and the race director was giving instructions I had to fight my way through the crowd and excuse myself by telling everyone I wasn't trying to get to the front I was trying to get my bib. Finally I got to the door. I'm not sure who she was but she recognized me right and way and hand me my bib, when I got out the door the horn had just blow, I ran back to the start line everyone had already passed!!! Today was not a great day for a race but I rather this over humidity any day. I ran for over two hours in the RAIN!! not un heard of. This course is not easy very hilly and the only redemption is the last two miles and the last .25 mile is a straight down hill that I did in under 8:00 mins a 7:45!!!

More than a race! Duathlon: the run and the nightmare!

That's an interesting prerace warmup: 2 hill repeats. Decades ago, I missed registration and the start and ran catchup and paced one of the current Wolfpit volunteers to a finish.
No hills in Hartford, right?

Coooool! That was a great read. I love the ending. Hectic start though you pulled through great.

Considering how everything went before the race and the rain during the race, I think you did pretty darn well.

Nice race report.

I hate when that happens. I've had a few races where I've almost missed the start because I was still in the parking lot or a portapotty when the starting gun was about to go off.

Another great race down. Even though you were thrown off by the late start you still ran a good time. And this was just a training run for your race this weekend. Good luck.

Must have been the day for sleeping in. I coached a bunch of runners on Sunday. We were to meet at 7:15. One hadn't shown up and when we phoned he was still in bed. Thankfully he was only 5 minutes away and we weren't late. Not a good way to get started, though. Good for you for running in the rain though and doing the race anyhow. Some would have just rolled over and said "to heck with it".
